Astrovirus Rapid Test is an in vitro immunoassay for the direct and qualitative detection of Astrovirus from human feces. Astrovirus Rapid Test is intended to be used as an aid in the diagnosis of Astrovirus infection.
Introduction
Astroviruses are now recognized as a cause of gastroenteritis in children (<5 yr), whose immune systems are underdeveloped, and elderly adults, whose immune systems are generally somewhat compromised1. Human astroviruses can be transmitted by saliva, air, cough, fecal-oral route, surfaces, blood, needles, blood transfusions, sexual contact, mother to fetus, etc2. Presence of viral particles in fecal matter and in epithelial intestinal cells indicates that the virus replicates in the gastrointestinal tract of humans.
The incubation period of the disease is approximately 3-4 days. The manifestation of the symptoms is an indication that the virus is shedding and as such you may continue to experience fever, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea for a couple of days. A study of intestinal disease in the UK, published in 1999, determined incidence as 3.8/1000 patient years in the community, the 4th most common known cause of viral gastroenteritis.
Although cell culture propagation of some human astroviruses is possible with the aid of trypsin3, virus isolation in cell culture is not applicable for astrovirus diagnosis in fecal specimens. A further refinement was the development of quantification techniques such as real-time RT-quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) assays, which provide high speed, sensitivity, and reproducibility and reduction of contamination risk in the diagnostic of human astrovirus, but may not helpful in diagnosing current illness.
Antigen detection is presently available for diagnosing astrovirus in fecal samples. The Astrovirus Rapid Test Device takes only 10 minutes and requires a small quantity of human feces to perform. It is an easy, rapid and sensitive diagnostic method for Astrovirus infection.
