Five key reminders for blood HCG determination

1. The blood β-HCG level peaks at about 8-10 weeks of pregnancy, and then the level begins to decline. Therefore, usually after 6-8 weeks of pregnancy, pregnant women are no longer recommended to undergo β-HCG testing to evaluate the pregnancy status, but B-ultrasound diagnosis is recommended. For pregnant women with irregular menstruation, attention should be paid to correcting the date of menopause.
2. If the HCG preparation was injected to prevent the miscarriage within a week before the blood HCG test, the serum HCG level will be disturbed and falsely increased.
3. The determination of urinary HCG is a qualitative or semi-quantitative test, which is affected by factors such as urine output, but it can be used to screen for pregnancy very early. If the urine test is negative, pregnancy can be basically ruled out.
4. The HCG level of twins is higher than that of singles, but it is not necessarily a double increase, and it is not the basis for the diagnosis of twins. Careful ultrasonography can detect it early.
5. In addition, the differential diagnosis of elevated HCG also includes: trophoblastic disease (hydatidiform mole, etc.), primary ovarian choriocarcinoma, and some other malignant tumors. Fortunately, these diseases are relatively rare. If there are abnormal clinical signs , need to be vigilant and screened.
